First Let’s understand the basic.
What is Flight cancellation and delay Compensation?
A flight delay is a when an airline flight takes off and/or lands later than its scheduled time.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) considers a flight to be delayed when it is 15 minutes later than its scheduled time.
A cancellation occurs when the airline does not operate the flight at all for a certain reason. When flights are cancelled or delayed, passengers may be entitled to compensation due to rules obeyed by every flight company, usually Rule 240, or Rule 218 in certain locations. This rule usually specifies that passengers may be entitled to certain reimbursements, including a free room if the next flight is the day after the cancelled one, a choice of reimbursement, rerouting, phone calls, and refreshments.
When a flight is delayed, the FAA allocates slots for take-offs and landings based on which flight is scheduled first.

Example of a claim & compensation
1 .The financial compensation indicated below shall be given only if the amount of tickets costs is higher than the compensation amount:
a) Rs. 2, 000/- or the value of the ticket whichever is less for flights having a block time of upto and including one hour
b) Rs. 3.000/- or the value of the ticket whichever is less for flights having block time of more than one hour and upto and including two hours.
c) Rs. 4, 000/- or the value of the ticket whichever is less for flights having a block time of more than two hours.
The compensation referred to in Para 3.5.1 shall be paid in cash, by bank transfer or with the signed agreement of the passenger in the form of travel vouchers, which must be paid within a stipulated time frame.
Cost to airlines
In Indian the Federal Aviation Administration estimates that flight delays cost airlines. Each Airlines have their own cost of paying upto 7.50 million Indian rupee, & Airlines are forced to pay federal authorities when they hold planes on the tarmac for more than three hours for domestic flights or more than four hours for international flights
Cost to passengers
Flight delays are an inconvenience to passengers. A delayed flight can be costly to passengers by making them late to their personal scheduled events. A passenger who is delayed on a multi-plane trip could miss a connecting flight. Anger and frustration can occur in delayed passengers.
In India when the passengers is affected by denied boarding, a cancellation or a long delay, the passenger may complain directly to the airline in the event the airline has not provided the compensation, reasonable facilities listed in Paras 3.5 and 3.6. If the airlines fail to fulfill their obligations, the passenger may complain to the statutory bodies set up under relevant applicable laws.

Laws regarding cancellations
Indian legislation: 4 hours or more in case of flights not falling under sub-para (a) and (b) of Para 3.4.1, Rs. 4, 000/- or the value of the ticket whichever is less for flights having a block time of more than two hours they will be paid in cash, by bank transfer or with the signed agreement of the passenger in the form of travel vouchers, which must be paid within a stipulated time frame.
